Day three at the Growthpoint Junior Nationals saw the top seeds continue their dominance and surge for top honours in yet another enthralling day of tennis.
Megan Basson (under-18) was the pick of the women’s play at the Oud Studente court when she came up against unseeded Relebongile Sereo. What should have been an easy game for the top seed proved otherwise as Sereo pulled out all the stops to cause an upset.
However, it was Basson who showed her class to advance to the next round beating Sereo 7-6 6-3 and will face local star Delien Kleinhans in the quarterfinal round. Basson was in high spirits ahead of the titanic clash saying: “I felt quite good on the court, but tomorrow will be the real test against Delien, she is a great player, but I am confident. If I get through tomorrow it will be half the job done.
Boys under 18 top seed Thando Longwe-Smit was also pushed to the edge when he faced Jordan Theron. Smit dropped a set but rallied on to claim a 6-4 3-6 6-1 victory. Action will once again get underway at 9 AM tomorrow (Saturday) morning.
