The South African quads wheelchair tennis team secured a bronze medal at the 2021 BNP Paribas World Team Cup in Alghero, Sardinia.

The team of Donald Ramphadi, Danny Mohlamonyane and Ronewa Mudzanani, defeated Japan 2-0 in the third-place playoff to clinch the bronze medal.

The country’s leading quad ace Ramphadi, who earlier in the week defeated former world number 1 David Wagner, got South Africa off to a good start, bagging a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 win over Shota Kowana. Mohlamonyane followed suit in the second singles match, wining 6-1, 7-5 over Koji Sugeno.

The quads team becomes the first African team to clinch a second medal at the BNP Paribas World Team Cup. The quads team bagged their first medal in 2019.

In the women’s event, the team which comprised of Mariska Venter, Mabel Mankgele and Nokwanda Hlongwane finished in 10th position after losing to France 2-1 in the 9th and 10th playoffs.
