South Africa's Kevin Anderson was handed a place in the second round of the Rolex Masters - an ATP Masters 1000 event in Paris after his Serbian opponent Laslo Dere retired at 5-2 in the opening set.
 
Anderson will next face Russian third seed and world number 5 Daniil Medvedev.
 
In the doubles, Raven Klaasen and his new Japanese partner Ben Mclachlan were unfortunately eliminated in the first round by unseeded pair - Norwegian Casper Ruud and American Taylor Fritz 6-7(5), 6-1, 10-5.
