South Africa (TSA) and American Express (Amex) are proud to share the continued success of the Amex Development Programme, an initiative which reinvests proceeds from the Amex Tennis Town fan park to help support the building of local communities and to nurture tennis talent in South Africa.
Since its launch in 2024, Amex Tennis Town - hosted at Montecasino during The Championships, Wimbledon - has offered South African tennis fans and American Express Card Members an experience that brings the magic of Wimbledon closer to home. The event offers live match screenings, a gourmet food market, an interactive kids’ club, virtual gaming zones, live tennis clinics and more. But beyond the fanfare, the initiative also encourages access to tennis at grassroots level and empowers local communities.
Supporting Youth Tennis
In July, TSA and American Express donated tennis equipment - including balls, mini nets, and rackets - to the Joburg Tennis Grassroots Foundation, a community outreach programme offering free tennis coaching to youth in Johannesburg’s inner city. This donation benefited more than 50 youths, giving them access to sport, mentorship, and a healthy lifestyle.
Launch of Hanover Park Tennis Programme in Cape Town
On 30 August 2025, the American Express Development Programme launched a new tennis initiative at Mount View High School in Hanover Park, Cape Town. The school will receive monthly coaching sessions from one of South Africa’s top coaches, along with donated tennis equipment (balls, rackets and mini nets), establishing it as a hub for tennis development for Primary and High Schools in the region.
The initiative follows the donation of a multipurpose tennis court, constructed through a partnership between the National Department of Sport, Arts and Culture and the Sports Trust. The court previously hosted hundreds of children during coaching clinics at Amex Tennis Town 2024.
“Our partnership with Tennis South Africa continues to reflect the strength of collaborative efforts to grow grassroots tennis participation. We’re proud to work together in support of local communities, while enhancing the experience for our Card Members. We’re excited to see the positive impact this initiative will have on tennis development in South Africa”, commented Briana Wilsey, Vice President and General Manager of Global Network Services EMEA at American Express.
Tennis South Africa General Manager, Anthony Moruthane said, “Tennis South Africa and American Express remain committed to building more opportunities for aspiring tennis players. By channelling ticket proceeds from Amex Tennis Town into real, measurable impact, the American Express Development Programme is not only growing the game - it’s introducing it to a new generation of players.”
“This is about more than tennis. It’s about creating safe spaces, nurturing talent, and giving every young person the chance to dream,” added Moruthane.
