South Africa’s wheelchair tennis star Kgothatso Montjane made a confident start to her Roland Garros campaign, defeating Chile’s Macarena Cabrillana 6-3, 6-3 in the first round on Tuesday. The match, lasting 1 hour and 37 minutes, sets up a second-round clash with China’s fourth seed, Ziying Wang.
In doubles, Montjane has teamed up with Japan’s Yui Kamiji - the defending 2023 champions—and the pair kicked off their title defence in style, cruising past France’s Ksenia Chasteau and the Netherlands’ Diede de Groot 6-0, 6-3 on Wednesday. Their next challenge will be against top seeds Manami Tanaka (Japan) and Zhenzhen Zhu (China).
Meanwhile, in the quads event, Donald Ramphadi faced a tough opener against Dutch second seed Sam Schröder, falling 6-0, 6-3. However, the 2023 doubles champion remains in contention as he prepares to partner Turkey’s Ahmet Kaplan against second seeds Andy Lapthorne (Britain) and Schröder.
